GIVING

Why should Christians give?

There’s a number of reasons that get trotted out, all bearing some semblance of truth – “God has been generous to you, so be generous in return”; “It belongs to God, and you’re just redistributing it”; “It will teach you many spiritual lessons”. There is some truth in those statements, but are these really the reasons?

As we read our bibles we see that giving is something that we do in response to what God has done for us in Christ, and it is done primarily to support the spread of the good news throughout the world. Thinking particularly of ourselves, we give so that the good news of Jesus can make a significant difference in the surrounding suburbs.

How much should I give?

2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us, "Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

A helpful piece of practical advice is to give 10% to God’s work, put 10% aside as savings, and live on 80% of your income. Of course that’s not a rule, that’s just a good guideline. When it comes to giving to God’s work just start somewhere, not because you feel forced to give, but rather in response to what God has done for you in Jesus
